Gaming taking the blame again
A
recent CNN video report on the suicide of a nine year old American boy
named Montana Lance has seen Clinical Psychologist Dr Brenda Wade
dropping at least part of the blame on violent video games. The child,
a fourth grade pupil at Steward Creek Elementary School in Texas, hung
himself in the school bathrooms after asking the school nurse to be
allowed to go to the restroom before locking himself in.
Dr Wade outlined two contributing factors that may have pushed the
young boy to kill himself, one being the instability that is a factor
in families presently. The other was video games. Wade’s comment was “…
that younger and younger children are exposed to very violent
videogames with content that I would shudder to have an adult watch on
a regular basis”.
However, just prior to this statement Dr Wade stated that she was
unwilling to blame the possible role that the child’s family may have
had in the tragic event, which may seem a bit disingenuous in shifting
the blame from the family to an outside entity.
You can locate the CNN video report here. Dr Wade’s comments on video games appear at about the 4min12s mark.
