Somali religious group bans video games

Hebz al-Islam, an Islamic insurgency group in Somalia, banned video games late last week, claiming that the pastime is eroding the country’s social norms. This came via a statement that was distributed around the areas of Somalia that the insurgents currently control.

The insurgents, who are currently in conflict with the existing federal government, had this to say regarding video games: "Video games are designed in such a way that they destroy our social traditions and for that reason, anybody found ignoring this order will be punished and equipment will be confiscated”.

The Islamic group have already banned sports, cinemas and DVDs in the Hebz al-Islam controlled areas of Mogadishu, now leaving young people with very little to do besides participating in the conflict. There are no education opportunities to speak of and this latest banning has prompted a village resident to comment, “The more they [the children] are prevented from playing, the more likely they are to join the fighting."
