Online game launched, aims for real-world results

Urgent Evoke, an online game that launches today, is targeting real-world results with their gameplay. Coming across as being closer to a reality game show than a game, Urgent Evoke is a series of challenges revolving around social entrepreneurship and is being backed by the World Bank Institute.

Jane McGonigal - the one who did all this

The aim is to affect real change in the world and Urgent Evoke, the brainchild of game developer Jane McGonigal, does this by a series of Quests and Missions that will require evidence upon completion. The game runs from today until 12 May 2010, where all players who complete the ten challenges will be awarded named ‘Certified World Bank Institute Social Innovator – Class of 2010’. There are additional benefits for the best players including travel scholarships and mentoring programs with businesses and social innovators from around the world.

The game is global but it is primarily designed to be played in Africa, and as such the challenges have been optimised to be accessed and completed using nothing more than a cellular phone Internet connection. Anyone can play by heading over to their website and signing up. There are roughly 4000 participants in Urgent Evoke at present.

The web comic presentation on their site spells out the game’s aims pretty well. Nice artwork too. CNN covered the Urgent Evoke program here. Jane McGonigal’s site is here.
