AMD 890GX embargo ends
 |
| Some branding for y'all |
As mentioned yesterday, the details for AMD’s latest chipset have been
under embargo. That embargo ended this morning at 7am. Details of the
enthusiast 890FX chipset are still not available but here are the
details of the mainstream 890GX chipset.
The 890GX chipset is an integrated chipset with an HD4290. This is the
fastest integrated GPU to date and is capable of delivering DirectX
10.1 performance. In benchmarks conducted by AMD (a pinch of salt is
therefore required) a Phenom II X4 965 with the integrated HD4290 is
only able to manage a 3fps lead on an Intel Core i5 661 (the processor
with the integrated GPU). However in Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
the Intel setup takes the lead by over 10fps.
The chipset supports CrossFire X technology allowing for a multi-GPU
setup to be employed that utilizes the onboard GPU. The HD4290 onboard
runs at 700MHz, has 40 unified shaders and comes with either a 64 or
128 bit memory interface. The chipset also boasts support for a
DisplayPort and is the first chipset to have native SATA 6Gbps support.

Asus Crosshair IV Formula review
The Asus Crosshair IV Formula is the first motherboard to arrive at the
PCF Ranch based on AMD’s new 890FX chipset. The 890FX is the flagship
of AMD’s 8-series chipsets and like its brethren lacks support for the
AM2+ socket/processors as well as DDR2 memory. AMD has given the 890FX
chipset a total of 38 PCI-E lanes which are split between four PCI-E
x16 slots which will have 8 lanes each, a single PCI-E x4 slot and two
